Our Story

Northmark was founded in early 2019 by a small group of financial professionals who recognized a gap in how financial concepts were being communicated to everyday Malaysians. Too often, discussions around currency exchange, Islamic finance, and cross-border planning were either overly technical or overly simplified, leaving people without the nuanced understanding they needed to make informed decisions.

Our founders had spent years working within Malaysia's banking sector, regulatory bodies, and international finance institutions. They saw firsthand how individuals struggled to navigate the complexities of foreign exchange when planning overseas education, how confusion surrounded the practical differences between conventional and Shariah-compliant products, and how expatriates and cross-border workers felt overwhelmed by tax treaties and remittance regulations.

The idea for Northmark emerged from a simple observation: people needed education, not sales pitches. They needed someone to explain how these systems worked within the Malaysian context, without pressure to purchase products or make immediate decisions. The name "Northmark" reflects our role as a navigational reference point — a marker that helps orient people as they chart their own financial course.

Since launching our first service in June 2019, we've worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds: young professionals encountering currency fluctuations for the first time, families evaluating Islamic banking options, Malaysians managing Singapore employment income, parents funding UK university fees, and retirees with Australian property holdings. Each person brings unique questions, and we've refined our approach to address the specific contexts in which Malaysians encounter these financial realities.

We operate from Kuala Lumpur, drawing on Malaysia's position as a regional financial hub with both conventional and Islamic banking systems. Our services remain deliberately educational rather than advisory — we help people understand concepts and systems, but we don't recommend specific products or manage investments. This distinction is important to us; it keeps our focus on knowledge transfer rather than transaction completion.

Our Standards and Approach

Educational Focus

We provide knowledge, not financial advice. Our role is to help participants understand concepts, systems, and frameworks without recommending specific products or transactions.

Malaysian Context

All content is grounded in Malaysian regulations, local market conditions, and the specific financial systems operating within the country. We reference BNM guidelines and local practices throughout.

Data Protection

We handle participant information in accordance with Malaysian data protection standards. Session discussions remain confidential and are not shared with third parties.

Small Group Sessions

We limit session sizes to ensure participants can ask questions, discuss their specific contexts, and engage meaningfully with the material.

Practical Resources

Participants receive reference materials, frameworks, and checklists they can take away and apply as their financial circumstances evolve over time.

Respectful Approach

We recognize that financial decisions are deeply personal. Our tone is measured and considerate, without pressure or urgency.

Our Values and Expertise

Financial literacy is most valuable when it aligns with lived experience. We've built our services around the actual questions Malaysians encounter: how do exchange rates affect the cost of studying abroad? What distinguishes a conventional mortgage from a Shariah-compliant financing arrangement? How do double taxation agreements work when earning income in Singapore while maintaining a Malaysian residence?

Our educators bring combined experience from banking operations, regulatory compliance, international treasury management, and Islamic finance product development. This diversity allows us to address topics from multiple angles and recognize when regulatory frameworks intersect with practical decision-making.

We update our content regularly to reflect changing regulations, current market conditions, and evolving financial products. When BNM issues new guidelines on foreign currency accounts, when Malaysia signs updated tax treaties, or when new Shariah-compliant structures emerge, we incorporate these developments into our sessions.

What we don't do is equally important: we don't sell financial products, we don't manage investments, we don't provide tax advice, and we don't promise outcomes. Our contribution is educational clarity within a specific Malaysian context. Participants leave with understanding, not portfolios.

This approach has allowed us to work with people across income levels, career stages, and financial situations. Whether someone is encountering these topics for the first time or seeking to deepen existing knowledge, our services provide structured learning without commercial pressure.
